The Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Electrochemical Process Engineering (IEK-14) specializes in electrochemical converters with electrolytes composed of polymer membranes fuel cells and electrolyzer cells (PEM-FCs & EC) and ceramic solid oxide cells (SOCs) as well as chemical converters for autothermal reforming, catalytic gas treatment, and fuel synthesis. One focus is on modeling and simulation from sub-cell parts and components to stacks and beyond. In addition to various simulation methods adapted to the task at hand, the coupling of methods and scales is a major challenge. The complexity of the tasks in combination with the required high spatial resolution of the simulations demands a sophisticated IT infrastructure. As part of the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA), high-performance computers (HPCs) at both RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich are used to generate numerical solutions. An important aspect of these activities is that the simulations and the underlying models are verifiable in the sense of scientific transparency. This is an important reason why the focus shifted, several years ago, from commercial to open source software. In the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) consistent use is being made of the OpenFOAM code suite, as a basis for simulation work. We recognize that there are a variety of additional open source platforms which may be adapted to the research environment.
